CNPA is an all volunteer organization dedicated to the photgraphy of nature, and the education of its members in all aspects of nature photography. The Foothills Region coordinators are Bob Phipps and Curt Hiller. The region includes Avery, Watauga, Ashe, Wilkes, Caldwell, Burke, Catawba, and Alexander coounties. The organization will meet on July 27th [Sunday] from 2:30 - 4:30 PM at 102 Main St., Lenoir, NC. The region will have monthly outings for photography and a monthly meeting for photography education. CNPA, as an orginization, has one yearly convention for the purpose of education, and a Mid-Year Outing for photographing nature. The annual convention moves round to various cities of the Carolina's. If you are interested in photography and wish to improve you skills, please join us in the formation of the new CNAP region. The Ashe County School Supply Drive is underway to help with this need. All school supplies will be delivered to the guidance office at each school to ensure that the items go to the youth with the most needs in our county. School supplies can be dropped of at AF Bank's WalMart in-store branch, Ashe Services for Aging, Sassafras and the Ashe County Board of Realtors office in downtown West Jefferson. Over one million Americans suffer from Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, commonly referred to as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). IBD are painful, medically incurable chronic illnesses that attack the digestive system. Crohn's disease may attack any part of the digestive system (from mouth to anus), whereas ulcerative colitis iritates the lining of the colon (large intestines). Patients may experience any, or all, of the following sympoms - abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, rectal bleeding, fever and weight loss. In many cases, the patient is hospitalized and undergoes surgical procedures to alleviate these symptoms. Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America continues to seek help in finding improved treatments and a cure for these debilitating conditions. Appalachian State University Recreation Management students, led by Dr. Stephanie West, are taking on the challenge this summer to raise money and awareness about Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis by hosting a 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, July 26, at Boone Greenway Trail. There will be a $15 preregistration fee postmarked by Wednesday, July 23, with $20 entry fee on race day. In addition, there will be a 1-Mile Fun Run for children, 12 and under, starting at 8:45 am. The entry fee for the 1-Mile Fun Run is $5. Refreshments will be provided throughout the event. The Summit will focus attention on emerging sectors in North Carolina’s economy and show their interconnection and relationship to a larger strategic movement called the Creative Economy. The Creative Economy is upon us and many of us aren’t aware of its economic importance. Often people think of artists when they hear the word "creative," however, the Creative Economy embodies more than art; it includes architects, designers, engineers, farmers, hoteliers, entertainers, storytellers, builders, construction workers and umpteen others who emphasize the aesthetic, intellectual and emotional aspects of their product or service, and their customers place a high value on these contributions. These people, their companies and their ideas are critical to our communities -- and they are becoming more relevant to economic development initiatives throughout North Carolina, especially western North Carolina. Panelists will represent new sectors in viticulture, agriculture and farmland preservation, recreation and natural resources, music and film, construction and design, and financing the Creative Economy. North Carolina School of the Arts Chancellor John Mauceri will be the luncheon keynote speaker. Dr. David McGranahan, senior economist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Resource and Rural Economics Division, will open the Summit with a national overview. Summit sponsors include Appalachian Regional Development Institute, Appalachian State University, AdvantageWest, BioNetwork BioBusiness Center, Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corp., Future Forward Economic Alliance, the High Country Council of Governments, Skyline Membership Corp., and the Western Piedmont Council of Governments. The Appalachian Regional Development Institute (ARDI) is an applied research and public service program of Appalachian State University. Art in the Park in Blowing Rock, North Carolina begins its 46th year, on May 17th! This award-winning series features the works of juried artisans from all over the Eastern U.S. in metal, fiber, watercolor and oil painting, wood, photography, basketry, jewelry, clay, glass and more. The Chamber of Commerce provides free shuttles throughout the day.
