Art in the Park in Blowing Rock, North Carolina begins its 46th year, on May 17th! This award-winning series features the works of juried artisans from all over the Eastern U.S. in metal, fiber, watercolor and oil painting, wood, photography, basketry, jewelry, clay, glass and more. The Chamber of Commerce provides free shuttles throughout the day. Just park your car at Tanger Outlet Center or the Food Lion Grocery on Highway 321 bypass, and hop on the shuttle which will bring you right into downtown Blowing Rock. The show is located at the American Legion Grounds just behind Memorial Park and admission is FREE. Show hours are 10 am til 5 pm. Dates for this year’s shows are: May 17, June 14, July 19, August 16, September 13 & October 4.

From Fields to Forests Saturday May 3rd 1:00 p.m. 221 Visitors Center Join a Ranger at the 221 Access Visitor Center for a 1.5 mile hike to discuss forest succession and signs of early settlers in this area. Bring water and wear sturdy shoes (983) Wildflower Hike Sunday May 4 2:00 p.m. Wagoner Access Join a park ranger for a hike to see and learn about the flowers of Spring. Hike is about 1-mile and will last approximately 45 minutes. Meet at the Ranger Office at the Wagoner Road Access at 2:00 pm for this informative hike. (812) Aquatic Sampling Saturday May 10, 2008 2:00 pm Wagoner Access Join a park ranger at the Wagoner Access office at 2:00 PM to sample the underwater life of the New River. Come prepared to get in a shallow portion of the river. Footwear should be appropriate to wear in the water. Sunscreen plus a hat is a good idea. Program will last approximately 1 hour. (982) Nonnative, Invasive Plants Saturday May 17th 1:00 pm 221 Visitors Center Nonnative, invasive plants may invade native landscapes and ecological habitats, causing harm to native plant and animal species. Learn to identify these plants and find out some control methods used to limit their spread. 1 hour slide presentation. (812) Ecological Footprints Saturday May 31, 2008 1:00 p.m. 221 Visitors Center Join a park ranger to explore the effect you have on Planet Earth. We will discuss what an individual consumes and discards in an average lifetime and what this means for the world's population. Discussion will include ways to reduce you individual impact on the Earth. Meet at 1:00 PM at the New River Visitor Center. Program will last approximately 45 minutes. Cannon, Jr. Memorial Hospital and Tanner Factory Store are joining forces to kick off our fight against cancer with a luncheon and fashion show at The Eseeola Lodge on Tuesday, June 3, 2008. The Department of Mathematical Sciences will sponsor Math Camp July 7-10 for rising 6th through 12th graders. The camps will meet from 6-9 p.m. and the fee is $120. This is the 11th year that this popular summer enrichment camp has been offered. This camp is designed to actively engage students in mathematics. Students who love math, fear math, hate math, excel at math and/or need help with math, are all welcome and encouraged to attend. In addition, 10 math camp participants will be invited to participate in an Extended Math Camp from 1-5 p.m. during Math Camp week.
